How does a professional person for use in their practice obtain a POM?
by wholesale from a pharmacy/wholesaler (signed order/requisition)
how does a member of the public obtain a POM? (4)
- against valid prescription from an appropriate practitioner
- emergency supply at request of a doctor/designated prescriber
- emergency supply at request of patient
- means of patient group direction (PGD)
when may a POM not be sold or supplied unless? (3)
- person who sells supplies POM is lawfully conducting a retail pharmacy business

what are prescriptions from EEA and switzerland like? (3)
- prescription issued in EEA member state/switzerland can be dispensed in UK if prescriber is legally entitled
- no CDs
- dispensed as private prescription
what are the different types of electronic prescription services (EPS)? (2)
- prescription tokens (issued by GP)
- dispensing tokens (issued by dispenser)
what are prescription requirements for a POM?
- signed by an appropriate practitioner in ink
- written or typed in indelible ink
- contain - appropriate practitioners address, date, indication of kind of appropriate practitioner, name, address and age
- must not be dispensed more than 6 months (repeatable prescriptions, CD)
what does appropriate date mean? (2)
- date which it was signed by appropriate practitioner
- date indicated by appropriate practitioner as the date before it should not be dispensed
what is a repeatable prescriptions? (4)
- contains direction that it can be dispensed more than once
- not allowed for CDs (sch2 and 3)
- dispensed for 1st time within 6 months of appropriate date
- w/o number of repeats, can only be 2 unless oral contraceptive within 6 months of appropriate date
what should be done with forged prescriptions? (3)
- should not dispense if not sure that it is genuine
- if prescriber is not known to them, verify Rx
- further checks for: unknown prescriber, new patient, excessive quantities, uncharacteristic prescribing/method of writing by known doctor, Dr before or after prescriber’s name
how are pharmacies paid for NHS prescriptions?
- reimbursement - payment of costs incurred (drugs, special delivery charges)
- remuneration - payment for work involved
what should be followed for POM records? (2)
- recorded except when - supply is on NHS script/ oral contraceptive, made in CD register, sale/supply is wholesale dealing and the order/invoice relating to sale retained 2 yrs
- entry must be made at time of the supply or on the following day
what is a POM book? (2)
- prescription only book/ private prescription register (hardbound register kept in pharmacy)
- electronic record which records the same details in an accessible format
what must a record of supply contain? (6)
- date of supply
- name, quantity, form, strength of product supplied
- date on prescription
- name and address of prescriber
- name and address of patient
- second/subsequent supplies (date of supply, reference to the first entry)
what are signed orders (classed as a wholesale transaction)?
- enables HCPs and organisation to obtain POMs from a pharmacy for professional use
- no specified format, should state ‘for use in my practice’
- pharmacist make an entry giving details of supply in POM book/signed order
- person requesting meds, pays for cost of drugs
- complete packs supplied
- product need not be labelled
