What does the Bee Diseases and Pest Controls (England) Order 2006 do?
- Makes it the law that if a beekeeper suspects they have a notifiable pest/disease then they have to contact the bee inspector
- Gives NBU inspectors powers to enter premises to inspect beehives
- outlines the process of standstill notices
What does EU regulation (1143/2014) do?
This is a piece of legislation covering the prevention and management of invasive alien species. This is the law that prevents you releasing Asian Hornets upon capturing them
What does the Trade in Animals and Related Products Regulations (2011) do?
The TARP regulations apply to all honey bees and bombus species. They outline veterinary checks on imports. They mean that the UK can restrict or ban imports if there is suspicion that they risk biosecuirty
What do you need to do if you import a queen?
- It should have a copy of the health certificate
- Single queen and no more than 20 attendants
- Inform the NBU of imports through Beebase and fill in an IPAFFS form.
- Transfer the queen to a new queen cage before introduction and send off the old queen cage to Fera.
What is the only country you can import packages of bees from?
New Zealand
What are the risks of importing bees?
- Introduction of notifiable pests
- Unfriendly genetics mixing with native strains of A.mellifera

What are the requirements under the Veterinary medicinces regulations?
- records must be kept for minimum 5 years
- details on the product, batch number, date of acquisition and quantity must all be recorded
- you need to also record what was treated and when
What legislation is linked with varroa mites?

The 2021 amendment makes varroa reportable at the apiary level
