Natives Land Act
1913
Designated around 10% of land in Africa as reserves in which whites could not buy land
Also meant Africans could not buy land outside of these reserves
Mixed Marriage Act
1949
Prohibited marriage between ‘whites’ and ‘non-whites’
Immorality Act
1950
Amended the 1927 Act to forbid unmarried sexual intercourse between ‘whites’ and ‘non-whites’
Population Registration Act
1950
Formally identified and registered people as one of 4 races: white, coloured, bantu, other
Group Areas Act
1950
Defined and segregated areas in cities in which members of each race could live and work. Led to the forcible removal of many townships like Sophiatown, District Six and Cato Manor
Separate Representation of Voters Act
1951
Removed the right of coloured people to vote in the Cape. Was deemed invalid by Supreme Court as required 2/3 majority to pass but National Party added sympathies judges and changed decision.
Bantu Authorities Act
1951
Granted authority to tribal leaders within traditional tribal areas and homelands.
Native Abolition of Passes Act
1952 (extended to women in 1956)
Abolished passes but now required all black males South Africans to carry a passbook at all times within white areas when they were over 16
Was extended to women in 1956 to much opposition
Urban Areas Act
1952
Granted rights to a limited group of blacks within cities such as granting them residency in white areas. It applied to people who had lived or worked in these areas for a long time
Bantu Education Act
1953
Placed control of all bantu schools under the government who provided an education ‘fit’ for an African to work in society.
Reservation of Separate Amenities Act
1953
Allowed for the provision of operate and unequal facilities for different races
Extension of University Act
1959
Made it illegal for a ‘non-white’ to apply for a formerly open uni without written permission from the Minister of Internal Affairs. Was done in an attempt to full segregate universities and eventually provide operate uni’s for blacks.
Unlawful Organisations Act
1960
Passed following the Sharpeville Massacre and allowed for the banning of the ANC, PAC and other opposition groups
Terrorism Act
1967
Established ability for police to detain people indefinitely without trial
