Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- Establishes key duties and responsibilities for employers and employees
- Employers have a duty of care to provide a safe working environment. They should provide training to employees
- The act establishes the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as a regulator for health and safety in the workplace
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- If regulations are not followed accidents could take place leading to harm/ injury and possibly legal implications or job loss
- Having risk assessments is a legal requirement, not having them could lead to harm and legal action
Date Protection Act 1998
- Date must be fairly and lawfully processed
- Only used for the purpose intended
- Information must not be kept longer than necessary
COSHH 2002
(Control of Substances Hazardous to Health)
- Provides correct procedures for handling/ storing and disposing of medicines, chemicals and waste
- Ensures correct PPE has been provided
- Hazardous substances are locked away
Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
- Reduces hazardous manual handling
- Training, information and supervision of hazardous manual handling
- Requires risk assessments of manual handling
RIDDOR 2013
(Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Regulations)
- Report all accidents that cause death
- Staff training on hoe to report
- Keep records of incidents/ accidents/ near misses
- Risk assessments and control measures required
Food Safety (General Hygiene Regulations) 1995
- Requires risk assessments and control measures to reduce cross- contamination of food
- Good personal hygiene of staff ensured
- Good hygiene of food prep areas
- Aims to reduce the spread of disease
Food Safety Act 1990
- Good personal hygiene is maintained when working with food
- Records of where the food is from
- Incident report completed for unsafe food
Civil Contingencies Act 2004
- A framework for emergency planning and response ranging from local to national levels
- Instructions for workplaces to follow during the emergency
- Organisations work together with emergency services, local authorities and health bodies
- Risk assessments in place
