One year conversion course (CPE/GDL)
What are the two stages of the Legal Practice Course?
1- core practice and course skills, 2- three elective modules (skills such as interviewing, negotiation and advocacy)
What is the roll of solicitors?
Allows a person to practice as a solicitor and become a member of the Law Society
Who regulates and controls solicitors?
Controlled by Law Society and regulated by Solicitors Regulation Authority
Give some examples of the work done by solicitors
Interviewing clients, advising on legal topics, negotiation, writing letters and drafting documents
What can the SRA do with solicitors if they receive complaints?
Refer them to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal and even strike/suspend them
What was established in the case of Hall v Simons?
People are able to sue their solicitors for negligence
What training is needed to become a barrister?
Bar Course Aptitude test, join Inn of Court and dine 12 times, one successful they are called to the bar
What is the practical aspect of training for barristers?
Pupilage via Pupilage gateway. First six months shadowing, second six months pupils can take on cases and then apply for tenancy
What are the different organizations for barristers?
Controlled by General Council of the Bar, regulated by Bar Standards Board, and must be a member of one of the four Inns of Court
Describe the work done by Barristers
Advocacy, drafting legal documents, writing counsels opinions, negotiating settlements, meeting with clients and offering advice (often self-employed working from a set of chambers with a clerk)
