What is civil law
The laws that are made by judges or parliament that aim to provide individuals and organizations the right to seek a remedy if their rights have been infringed
What is a breach
Breaking or failing to fulfill a duty or obligation
What is causation
The direct relationship between one event and another event, where one event was the reason that the outcome occurred
What is loss
A type of harm or damage suffered by a person, and can include both economic and non-economic loss
Limitation of actions
The restrictions on bringing a civil law claim after the allowed time
What is a remedy
An order from the court which upholds the plaintiff’s civil rights by providing relief and/or compensation for the loss or injury they have suffered
What are damages
An award of monetary compensation to the plaintiff, against the defendant
What is negligence
Doing or failing to do something that a reasonable person would, or would not, do and which causes another person damage, injury or loss
What is deformation
Causing serious harm to a persons reputation by publishing material about them that changes the way people feel about them
