Legacy and Embed Systems Flashcards
What are legacy systems?
Legacy systems are those systems that are no longer supported in todays networks.
They are inherently vulnerable to security breaches because they cannot be upgraded or patched.
One solution to this is the air gap these systems.
What are embed systems?
They are related to legacy systems in that many legacy systems have embed microchips.
These embed microchips are typically programmable to provdie dedicated input and output instructions to a specialized device.
These are included in thermostats, fridges and dishwashers.
Embedded systems are becoming increasingly conecetd to the internet. Security is this very important for these systems.
What are patch panels?
Apatch panel is a place commonly used to collect incoming cable runs from networking deviecs throughout a facility.
It provides a connection port between devices and the switches and routers.
They can be unpowered or powered. POwered patch panels can regenerate weak signals as they receiev them.
What safety measures should be taken with patch panels?
Ensure all cables are secured with cable ties or other such products.
Ensure cables are not crossing walkways or udnerneath desks where they can be kicked.
What does PoE and EoP mean?
Power over Ethernet and Ethernet over POwer.
What is PoE?
This is a method of powering deviecs that do not have a battery or access to a power outlet.
A PoE switch sends a small amount of DC current over an ethernet cable along with data to power PoE devices.
Devices that support PoE connections can recieve power up to 100m away.

Devices that support PoE connections can recieve power up to 100m away.
Power can also be inserted in the middle of a cable run using a PoE inserter.
What are some examples of PoE devices?
WAP, Surveillance video devices and IP phones.
What is EoP also reffred to as?
Powerline networking.
How does EoP work?
Powerlne networking uses non new wires, allowing for a device to simply connect to a power outlet on the wall and connect to the network through that.
Infomration is sent over the wires at certain frquenceis delivering data. This is done oevr the same wires as th ones that deliver electricity.
What are cloud based network controllers?
These are devices in the cloud the allow for network management.
A medium sized company may have many WAPs, they require some form of controller to manage efficiently.
What is an example of a cloud based network controller?
Cisco Meraki.
It centralizes the management, provides visibility and controls all the Meraki devices in one dashboard.
The network administrator is able to manage the nwtrok with the click of a button.
