Q

How are signals transmitted through Fiber Optic Cabling?

A

They are sent in as electric, converted to light, then coverted back to electric at the destination.

Q

Why are Fiber Optic Cables not affected by EMI or RFI?

A

Because they use light for tasnmisson, which cannot be affected by these things.

Q

What are the properties of fiber optic cabling?

A

It can go very far, transmitting signals faster and has a greater bandwidth than copper cabling.
It is very thin and suscpetible to sharp bends, but the core and cladding make it veyr strong.
It is durable and deployed in harsh environemnts in networks throughout the world.

6
Q

What does the cladding do?

A

Made of slightly different chemcials than the core.

Acts as a mirror, reflecting light back into the core preventing any loss.

Q

What does the strengthening material do?

A

Prevents the cable from stretching when pulled.

Uses same material as bulletproof vests.

Q

What are the characteristics of Single-Mode Fiber?

A

Has a smaller core than MMF. Uses laser technology to send signals down the core.
Best for long disatnce applications such as long haul telephony or cable TV applications.

Q

What are the characteristics of Multi-Mode Fiber?

A

Has a larger core than SMF and uses LED to send light impulses.
Good for long distance, but shorter than SMF.
Usually used with LANs.
Provides Bandwidth up to 10 Gb/s over a length of 550 metres.

Q

What are SC Connectors?

A

Square or standard connectors.
Widely adopted LAN or WAN connector that uses a simple push-pull mechanism to insure positive insertion.
Used with multimode and single fiber.

Q

What are Duplex Multimode LC connectors?

A

LC SImplex connectors that use a Duplex Connector.

17
Q

What is WDM?

A

Wave Divison Multiplexing.
This is a technology that seperates the send and transmit signals within the fiber.
It is used in Fiber standards with BX in the name. Light travels in both directions in these cables.
