Q

What does Young argue about subcultures?

A
  • A lack of jobs for the w/c has left many socially excluded.
  • We live in a ‘bulimic society’ where we are exposed to a variety of consumer products which the w/c cannot purchase.
  • W/c deviant subcultures emerge as group solutions to the problem of relative deprivation and marginality arising from social inequality.
  • These act as motivators for crime and some w/c subcultures see offending as acceptable behaviour.
