What is relative deprivation?

A

How if people compare themselves to other people they will then become resentful which is made worse by the media and makes people turn to crime to achieve the best things

What are subcultures ?

A

Young people turn to subcultures like gangs, when opportunities for success are blocked. Young people find it hard to get a job with good pay so turn to crime to get the good things in life.

A

People feel excluded from main stream society then become frustrated so they then commit violence and vandalism (non utilitarian crime)

  • draws attention to poverty, inequality and relative deprivation as causes of crime

-unlike right realism its not a savage and as victim blaming

Two limitations

A
  • does not explain crimes committed by wealthy people such as white colour crime, corporate crime and state crime
  • it over-predicts the amount of working class crime, not everyone who experiences retained deprivation and marginalisation turns to crime
