Causes of crime

A

relative deprivation :
-lee and young- crime has its roots in deprivation, but deprivation itself is not directly responsible for crime
- example: living standards have risen since the 1950s, so level of deprivation has fallen, however crime rates have increased.
- although people are better off today, due to media expectations and stuff, people feel poorer.

Marginalisation
- when people lack the resources to fully participate in society

- cohen ‘status frustration’

early intervention, perry pre school

improve policing, over 90% of crimes are cleared up by the police as a result of information from the public, however research suggests that public confidence in the police has declined. if public relationship breaks then information from victims of crim will dry up
