feeling deprived in comparison to others in society
Marginalisation
those who lack organisations to represent their interests
Subculture
collective solutions to group problems
Square of Crime
Informed controls - fears of rejection are more likely to reduce crimes than the use of formal sanctions
Victims - concern for the consequences of crime
Offender - avoid romanticising criminal
State - is losing fight against crime and there is a loss of public confidence in police because of military style

- community policing

- ethnic minority police officers
Government Policy
Left Realists have had influence on policy – especially in New Labour
Tough on crime and the causes of crime (eg inequality / discrimination)
These ideas became part of the political manifestos at the time
They had an influence on politics
Criticisms
- Hughes - failed to explain the causes of street
- Hughes - regurgitates subcultural theory
- Box - white collar crime cannot be understood
- Moore - regurgitates a lot of work already done
