Left Over Flashcards- *=Research Methods
*Psychologist vs Psychiatrist
Psychologist: Are concerned with the whole range of human thinking, emotion and behaviour.
Psychiatrists are medically qualified (doctors) as well as psychologists and may prescribe drugs to treat or control symptoms of mental illness.
*Observer bias:
Occurs when an observer allows their own expectations, previous experience, motives or other personal factors to interfere with the accuracy of their observations.
*Debriefing:
Where possible, participants must be informed of the true nature and purpose of the investigation before they consent, in writing, to participate.
*Psychology:
Psychology is the systematic study of behaviour and mental processes including perception, cognition and emotion.
*Hypothesis:
A tentative, testable prediction of the possible relationship between two or more variables.
*Non-experimental (descriptive) research methods:
The measure that was used taps what the test-developer intended to measure and is comparable to a standard.
Sources of error in data:
Random error is caused by any factors that randomly affect measurement of the variable across the sample- i.e. Mood
Systematic error is caused by any factors that systematically affect measurement of the variable across the sample- i.e. Loud noise
**To reduce error-pilot test and ask for feedback
Overt behaviour:
Observational behaviour:
Talking, crying
Ethics:
Moral principles and standards that guide individuals to distinguish between right and wrong, or good and bad
Covert behaviour:
Private, internal behaviours that cannot be directly observed (thinking, remembering)
*Empirical evidence:
Case studies, surveys, correlational studies and archival research
Behavioural variables such as interaction between a family
