Lectures 6-9 - Chromosome Variation Flashcards
What is polyploidy?
More than the normal set of chromosomes, Tripoid, tetraploid
How does autopolyploidy occur in mitosis vs meiosis?
Mitosis: no cell division
Meiosis: non-disjunction in meiosis 1
Problems with polyploidy
Most are sterile
What is an allopolyploid?
Result of cross between 2 or more species
What occurs in animals for polyploidy?
Inter species crosses result in a sterile animal
What is aneuploidy?
Diploid genome that lacks a chromosome or has an extra chromosome
Non disjunction in meiosis 1?
Leads to trisomic and monosomic cells
Non disjunction in meiosis 2?
Results in trisomic, monosomic, and two normal diploids
When do frequency of trisomies increase?
Age
What is a deletion?
Missing chromosome segment
What is a duplication?
Extra chromosome segment?
What is hypoploidy?
Less genetic material such as deletion of chromosome segment or loss of entire chromosome
What is hyperploidy?
More genetic material such as duplication of chromosome segment or gain of a chromosome
What is a translocation?
Occur when segment from one chromosome is detached or reattached to different chromosome
What is a reciprocal translocation?
Pieces of two no homologous chromosomes are exchanged without any net loss of genetic material
