Lectures 46 and 47 Flashcards
Atherosclerosis process:
Fat deposits in arteries –> stenosis of the arteries –> less blood flow –> starves organs –> ischemia
What is heart ischemia called?
angina
Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease means narrowing/ blockage of coronary arteries
What can coronary artery disease turn to
Acute Coronary Syndrome
Myocardial Infarction
A sudden lack of blood flow to heart. Usually CAD becomes completely or partially occluded.
Permanent damage to heart
Arteriosclerosis is when there are:
Atheroclerosis
Arteriolosclerosis
Monckeberg medial calcific sclerosis
Atherosclerosis:
Atheromas ( fibrous fatty plaques)
Large and medium arteries
Atheromatous Plaque: fibrous cap and necrotic center
When a plaque ruptured the body is exposed to all contents and the subendothelial collagen –> stimulates platelet activation–> microthrombi
Atherosclerosis Steps:
- normal artery
- endothelial disfunciton
- fatty streak formation
- stable plaque formation
- unstable plaque formation
What type of arteriosclerosis can hypertension cause?
It can cause hyaline arteriolosclerosis and hyper-plastic arteriosclerosis
Hyaline Arteriolosclerosis
Early diabetics, hyaline thickening/narrowing of lumen. Highlighter pink
Hyperplastic Arteriolosclerosis
Acute or severe increases in blood pressure, malignant HTN. Onion skin, lumen obliterated
