What are the components of reflective practice?
Self-awareness, reflection and critical thinking.
What are the four pillars to emotional intelligence?
- Self-awareness (Recognize your own emotions & understand how they influence your actions)
- Self-regulation (Healthily manage emotions. Adapt to changing circumstances)
- Empathy (Understand other people’s emotions & offer comfort and support)
- Social skills (Build and maintain relationships. Effective communication)
What is reflection in nursing
1) It means SELF EXAMINATION
that requires an individual
2) TO LOOK OVER WHAT HAS HAPPENED in practice, in an effort to
3) EVALUATE AND IMPROVE IT.
4) to SEEK OTHER EXPLANATIONS AND ALTERNATIVES,
5) as well as to ENCOURAGE PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.
Why is reflection important for nurses?
Nursing practice is constantly changing and evolving and as a result, nurses often work in complex situations that challenge their existing knowledge.
Help make sense of situations/ feelings/ thoughts
Increase knowledge and helps articulate learning
Identify the moral and ethical components of nursing
What are the steps to the clinical reasoning cycle? (8)
- Consider the patient’s situation
- Collect cues/ information
- Process information
- Identify problems/ issues
- Establish goals
- Take action/ implentation
- Evaluate outcomes / implentation
- Reflect on process and new learning
What is reflection in action?
Reflecting at the time it’s happening. Deciding how to act at the time. Acting immediately.
Is the nurse’s ability to read the situation- How a patient is responding to an intervention- adjust interventions on assessment
What is reflection on action?
Reflecting on something that has happened. Thinking about what might you do differently if it happened again. New information gained/ perspectives from reflection that may be used to process emotions.
Contributes to ongoing clinical knowledge development and clinical judgement
What is reflection for action?
When you miss a step. Self-evaluation. Openness to different perspectives. Coaching from an expert. Development time and space.
Thinking about future actions with the intention of improving or changing a practice
Engaging in reflection requires (5)
1) Knowledge of what occurred was a result of nursing actions.
2) A sense of responsibility to connect actions to outcomes.
3) Personal skills and habit of reflection on practice.
4) Supportive clinical context.
5) Awareness of own values/ belief system
What is the 6 steps to the GIBBS reflective model?
- Description (What happened)
- Feelings (What were you thinking and feeling)
- Evaluation (What was good and bad)
- Analysis (What sense can you make of the situation)
- Conclusion (What else could you have done)
- Action plan (if the situation arose again what would you do)
What are some ways to reflect?
Journalling
Audio or visual recording
Nursing chat rooms
Poetry
Painting/pottery
Meditating
What is 4 segments to the johari window?
1) Open self (Information about yourself that you and others know)
2) Blind self (Information about yourself that you dont know but others do)
3) Hidden self (Information about yourself that you know but others dont )
4) Unknown self (Information that no one knows)
What are the steps to the Rolfe reflective model?
What? (What happened? who was involved?)
So what? (What was the most important aspect of situation)
Now what? (What have I learnt? How can I apply it in the future)
Why is seeking feedback important?
- Reality check
- How Do I see myself?
- How do others see me?
- This is not a once only activity, this is a life long process
