Lecture Set 3 Flashcards
What are the different types of bonds
Covalent = sharing of electrions
Polar= unequal sharing of electrons
Non-polar= equal sharing
Noncovalent
Ionic = electrostatic interactions
Hydrogen = electronegative atom and hydrogen covalently bound to a second EN atom
van der Waal’s = random transient dipoles, momentary random fluctuations in electron density
hydrophobic = aggregation to reduce ordering
NOT attraction between molecules,
Why is it good that visible wavelength has a longer wavelength than C-C bonds?
Means lower energy than C-C, therefore the C-C bonds aren’t broken when visible light hits
Difference between covalent/non-covalent?
Sharing of electrons
amount of energy to break bonds, stability
Hydrogen bonding in water
surface tension high specific heat capacity high vaporization energy/boiling point good polar solvent every H2O molecule with 4 H-bonds = crystal lattice (ice)
2 types of chaperones
Molecular chaperones = bind to unfolded/partially folded areas, prevent it from aggregating with other nonpolar sections of proteins
Chaperonins = directly involved with folding
Define affinity
measurement of number/strength of all noncovalent interactions between 2 molecules
