Lecture IV: The Dental Exam Flashcards
Review and identify the importance of a dental-medical history questionnaire
- Adverse drug reactions
- Conditions of highest risk
- Some procedures need antibiotic prophylaxis
- Asthma inhaler–>dental/oral issues
- HPV oral pharyngeal cancer
Examine multiple scenarios where dentistry and medicine interact
- Dentists require routine medical consult to perform routine dental care:
- pre-med: cardiac conditions/valves, joint replacements, diabetes, other
- allergies
- current meds/past
- medical condition impacting care - Medical requires dental consult:
- systemic disease presenting with severe oral complications
- routine head and neck exam reveals dental needs
- dental care needed prior to medical treatment regimens
- ER visits - Dental requires medical consult due to findings during dental care
- response to dental therapy
- presentation during visit
- complication in office
Demonstrate the impact of medical information/patient medical status on the delivery of dental care
Think about it!
List basic dental terms, definitions, and numbering systems of the dentition to facilitate communication between dentists and physicians

Identify circumstances in which patients may require dental consult
- Many systemic diseases/conditions have oral manifestations (e.g. Crohn’s Disease, Lupus, Nutritional deficiencies in pregnancy/hormonal issues)
- Head and neck exam reveals dental concerns (e.g. bilateral palpation, lip inspection, mouth exam – tongue/gingiva/buccal/floor of mouth/palate)
- Prior to medical treatment regimes: chemo, joint replacement, cardiac valve, HIV/Immuno-compromised, transplants, etc.)
- ER visits
Describe the dental-systemic disease inter-relationship
- Dental disease of hard tissue - decay (pain, infection, extraction, antibiotics, nutrition)
- Transient bacteremia of dental origin
- Periodontal disease (microbial etiology, chronic low grade inflammation, painless, 50% incidence U.S., may adversely affect systemic health, elevated C-Reactive Protein (CRP) - a protein in blood that reflects amount of inflammation in body - is a direct risk factor for cardiovascular disease)
• Dental Symptoms←→Medical Symptoms
o Dental pain often is referred to: head, ear, eye, peri-orbital, jaw
o Medical conditions may cause pain in teeth/oral cavity: maxillary sinusitis, otitis media, TMJ, nerve disorder, migraines, psychogenic, neoplasm: leukemia

4 Types of Teeth
