Lecture five - Brain body interaction failure Flashcards
What is the disorder APRAXIA?
Difficulty performing skilled and purposeful movement.
There are many different forms of this disorder, such as ideational apraxia, where the individual is unable to perform a motor act because they don’t understand the concept of the movement, e.g. being asked to wash their hands, but they cannot conceptualise, plan, or execute this action.
What are some of the different types of appraxia we discussed in lecture?
What are treatment options?
Constructional apraxia - difficulty arranging or contstructing objects.
What is ATAXIA?
Ataxia is the lack of voluntary coordination and muscle movements.
What causes ATAXIA?
Damage or defecits in the cerebellum.
What are some forms of ATAXIA discussed?
What treatment options are there for ATAXIA?
What is PARKINSON’S disease?
What are some of the symptoms?
An age-related degenerative condition leading to mental and physical difficulties and impairments.
What are some of the known causes Parkinson’s disease?
Degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra lead to dysregulation of excitation and inhibition in the motor cortex via the basal ganglia.
Are all movements affected by Parkinson’s disease?
No.
What are some of the treatment options for Parkinson’s disease?
When experiencing freezing gate, individuals can imagine stepping over an obstacle. This can sometimes help. Or listen to music.
What is POLIO?
Polio is disease caused by the polio virus that destroys the grey matter of the spinal cord.
What is POLIO caused by?
The polio virus.
The virus can eventually enter the spinal chord and causes destruciton of the grey matter of the spinal cord, including the alpha-motor neurons, which leads to the inability for signals to be sent to and from the muscles.
What is MYASTHINA GRAVIS?
Myasthina Gravis is caused by an autoimmune response to the nicotinic receptors at the neuromuscular junction.
What is anarchic hand syndrome?
Alien hand syndrome.
One hand is not under voluntary control.
What is tourettes syndrome?
Unwanted and involuntary repetitive movements, called tics.
Cause unknown.
