Q

Observational vs. Experimental Studies

A

Observational Study: This is when the units of the study are disturbed as little as possible. Here we observe units and collect information of interest on them but do not attempt to influence the responses

  • Purpose: To describe and compare existing groups or situations
  • No influence of manipulation

Experiment: Here we as the investigator actively impose some treatment or condition in order to observe the response

  • Purpose: To study whether the imposed treatment causes a change in the response.
