Lecture 9 - Herbs Flashcards
What are herbs?
Plants with soft tissues only (no secondary thickening) that may die down in winter
Pros and cons of having wood
Pro:
Resilient, better for growing light as growth can be high
Con:
Expensive, inflexible
How can angiosperms compete for light without wood?
Epiphytes, climbers, hemiparasites
Epiphytes
Grow in high locations but suffer from a lack of resources
Climbers
Grow higher without having wood but these have limited resilience
Hemiparasites
Steal from the host
When can weed species thrive?
Exploit transient gaps in ecosystems and live for short periods of time
Ephemerals
Exploit disturbance
Carnivorous plants: what do they do, where do they grow, and why?
Capture animals and consume them in low nutrient environments as they cannot gain sufficient nutrients form the environment
Stress tolerators: examples and what they do?
Marine plants -> have to deal with salt stress so can break down salt to reduce solute concentration in the plant
