Lecture 9: Global policies for reducing GHG emissions Flashcards
Paris Climate Accords COP21 GOALS
- Paris 2015
- keep temp increases well below 2 degrees C above pre-industrial levels
- scale up global efforts to limit temp increases below 1.5 degrees C
Paris climate accord (PCA) how many countries agreed
- 195 countries agreed
-
COP24 Poland 2018 GOAL & outcome
- how to acc implement Paris accord
- TRUMP kicked off and US pulled out
- Russia hasn’t ratified it
- Rumours brazil might pull out
- (signed by representative, ratified by government)
Trump and COP24
- Doesnt agree w global warming –> TWEETS
- he still should comply but isn’t
Concerns for US pulling out of COP24
other countries may also pull out, but quite the opposite
- others trying a lil more
- Leonardo DiCaprio activist
- USCA formation
USCA
- formed in US
- 22 states signed up
- policies that advance the goals of the Paris Agreement –> reduce ghg emissions by at least 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2025
- take and report progress
- accelerate new & existing policies to reduce carbon pollution & promote clean energy
Green New Deal
using public funds to create research, development & jobs in the renewable energy sector & reduce carbon emissions
- laughed at by a lot of people in the US
Global New pledges
- UK ban diesel cars in the UK by 2025
- FRANCE: ban all petrol & diesel cars by 2040
- ARGENTINA:Carbon tax on fossil fuels
- $100billion in a climate fund for developing countries
& MORE
optimism of climate change =
- theres a lot of research on it
- public backing (protests)
Why we not doing more? What is the problem?
- MONEY:
- -economic crash
- capitalism
- oil revenues
- new sus tech is expensive
PUBLIC OPINION:
- climate scepticism
- -apathy
- nimbyism (“not in my back yard”)
climate scepticism =
- % of people who believe climate change is real…
- and belief depends on experience (individuals more likely to accept global change in temp if they see data in graph rather than text)
- varies around the world (more people in island countries believe)
scientific responsibility:
- scientists are traditionally reticent - publish research and allow people to view it
James Hansen
‘Climate Change Yoda’
- told congress in 1988 about GLOBAL WARMING
- Now 74, has been arrested in the US 8 times for protesting
How do we make people care?
