Lecture 9 DuBois again: Race and Labor Globally Flashcards
Racialization
Racialization is the process by which racial attributes and meanings are projected onto previously non-racial situations
race has passed across generations; racialization though has not been constant, it is constantly changing
* social difference: caste, religion
* religion: crusades the articulation was christians vs muslims not white vs arabs although today it may be construed that way; this is why racialization is considered to be a more modern phenomenon
* what this modern phenomenon also refers to is the dominance of race as key social differentiations is relatively new. why? –>
* development of capitalism is centrifugal process (outwards)
* colonialism plays a big role in explaining racialization: how ar eu going to justify subjugation and different treatment? (esp. european colonies)
* by using moral justification to say that they are going to convert the people and save souls.
- also important to consider this diff between race and religion; race is biological and therefore more permanenent; but if u think about it there is no biological basis for race
- religion is more dynamic bc it includes ability to convert and all
DuBois talks about color line as the problem of the country. to whim global white supremacy was the root of colonialism and was against it. he used this reasoning to justify japans invasion of china and its colonialism by seeing it as a challenge to global white supremacy; very american approach because he erased forms of social difference that really mattered (chinese, korean, japanese); he looked at broadly from white vs non white
Racialization and 21st century globalization
- colonialism is over:
- formalized racial hierarcy abolished (kim crow)
- racialized inequality exists at the global level (avg invomes for white vs black people; disparity much bigger)
- race and gloabl supp;y cians
* apple at california vs china
but not all bad bc we see a shift un thr worlds biggest economies over time
