Lecture 9, Blood Supply, Innervation and Lymphatic Drainage of the Shoulder Girdle Flashcards
What is the brachial plexus?
the arrangement of nerves allows individual nerve fibers derived from different segments of the spinal cord to be distributed together to the extremities.
What forms the brachial plexus?
the anterior 1 rami of roots from C5 to T1 (sometimes C4 and T2)
How is the brachial plexus divided?
Roots
Trunks
Divisions
Cords
Branches
Nerves
What are the trunks of the brachial plexus?
superior trunk
middle trunk
inferior trunk
What roots form the superior trunk?
C5 and C6
What roots form the middle trunk?
C7
What roots form the inferior trunk?
C8 and T1
What are the divisions?
each trunk divides into an anterior and posterior division
What forms the posterior cord?
the posterior division of all three trunks
What forms the lateral cord?
the anterior division of the superior and middle trunks.
What forms the medial cord?
the anterior division of the inferior trunk
How do the cords get their names?
From their position in relation to the 2nd part of the axillary artery.
What are the three cords?
medial
lateral
posterior
What nerves originate from the roots?
dorsoscapular nerve
long thoracic nerve
phrenic nerve
What nerves originate from the superior trunk?
subclavius nerve
suprascapular nerve
What nerves originate from the medial cord?
medial pectoral nerve
medial brachial cutaneous nerve
medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve
What terminal branches originate from the medial cord?
medial branch of median nerve
ulnar nerve
What terminal branches originate from the lateral cord?
lateral branch of the median nerve
musculocutaneous nerve
What individual nerve originate from the lateral cord?
lateral pectoral nerve
What is the course of the long thoracic nerve?
lateral rib cage, quite superficially
What is the course of the suprascapular nerve?
travels through the suprascapular notch deep to transverse scapular ligament
What is the course of the ulnar nerve?
passes between the humeral and ulnar heads of flexor carpi ulnaris, posterior to medial epicondyle, lateral to pisiform and hook of hamate
