What is Gentrification
A
- Leads to economic reordering of property values, commercial opportunities for the construction industry and an expansion of private owner occupation
- This results in the displacement of low-income residents by those of a higher social status, until middle class residents outnumber the original inhabitants of the neighbourhood.
- Leads to the transformation of the the built environments.
- Changes in the social composition of neighbourhoods and an increase in property prices are often followed by changes in the retail and service landscape

What are Jane Jacobs 3 main qualities for city streets?
A
- Must be a clear demarcation between what is public space and what is private space
- Must have eyes on the street
- Sidewalks must have users on it fairly continuously, to add eyes on the street and allow for people watching

A
Journalist, writer, 1950-70’s observing cities, design cities for people not cars

What is an ideal city street?
A
- Human scale building 5-6 stories high
- Mixed use development, residential and stores

A
It is an indicator for good space and communities, if spaces are accessible for children, it can accommodate everyone
