describe the position of the bladder in males, females, and pregnant females
male and female - lies in pelvis, anterior to other organs in pelvis
pregnant - rests against lower portion of the front of the abdominal wall
what is the difference between male and female urinary systems?
urethra is shorter in females (straight in females, S for males)
what is the route of the urethra in women?
urethra firmly attached to anterior wall of vagina, passes through pelvic floor muscles, opens anterior to vaginal opening and posterior clitoris
what is the route of the urethra in men?
urethra extends from bladder through prostate gland through penis
what is urination like for children?
frequent micturition in infants, small bladders and less concentrated urine
incontinence before control of external sphincter develops
how does kidney and bladder function decline with age?
- nephrons decrease in size and number
- filtration declines
- tubules less efficient at secretion and reabsorption
- recognition of desire to urinate is delayed
- loss of muscle tone in bladder
