Laminitis causes:

A

Colic
Untreated infections
Nutrition (starch>toxic in bloodstream>disrupted bloodflow>causing the inflammation)

Recognizing laminitis

A
  • Temperature of the hoof
  • Pounding digital pulse (normally almost no pulse)
  • Hoof tester (pressure)
  • Looks like walking in eggshells
  • Lift pressure of front toes by stretching out
  • Fever

Laminitis

A

Inflammation of the laminae, allowing the coffin bone to sink.

Extremely painful

Prevent laminitis

A
  • Pasture turnout (high sugar), limit time or seize
  • Avoid high sugar and starch feeds (in grains)
  • Obese horses
  • Base feed roughage
