Lecture 8 - Fatigue Flashcards
Define fatigue and the two main types of fatigue
An exercise induced impairment of performance
Central fatigue - CNS
Peripheral - neural mechanical factors and energetica of contraction
What is central fatigue, what causes it
Reduction in the motor units firing frequency
Peripheral feedback
CNS arousal alters the state of fatigue
See notes for hypoglycaemia and serotonin
Shag
What are the 7 sites of peripheral fatigue
Motor neurone Peripheral nerve NMJ E-C coupling Contractile mechanism Metabolic energy supply
3 causes of NMJ failure
Conduction failure
Altered ACh release
Altered ACh receptor sensitivity
What are the products of intense exercise
Intense exercise induces high rates of glycolysis and atp hydrolysis increasing Pi H+ and ADP, they interfere with the cross bridge cycle so induce muscle fatigue
