lecture 8 - cascades, disease and mutualism Flashcards
what is a trophic cascade
the addition or removal of top predators and involve reciprocal changes in the relative populations of predators and prey through a food chain
micro parasites
reproduction leads to an increase in numbers within the host
macro parasites
reproduction does not lead to an increase the number within that host (more than one host)
what is a parasitoid
an insect whose larvae live in a host and eventually kill it
major types of transmission pathways
vertical transmission
horizontal transmission
vertical transmission
transmission between generations from parent to offspring
horizontal transmission
transmission within one generation between unrelated individuals
direct contact transmission e.g. sexual, soil borne, waterborne, aerial (common cold)
Micorrhizza
symbiotic association between plant roots and fungus
refers to the role of the fungi in the plants root system
