lecture 3 - intra and interspecific competition Flashcards
logistic equilibrium equation
dN/dt = r* (l - N/K)
logistic growth equation
dN/dt = rN ( 1 - (n-k) / k)
what is a logistic model?
a model of population growth where the rate of reproduction is proportional to both the existing population and the amount of available resources - density dependent
what are the 3 assumptions of the logistic model?
1 - density dependence is linear
2 - population reaches k smoothly
3 - k is constant, yet may vary year to year
r selected species
high fecundity small body size lots of offspring little parental care short generation time live in unstable environment
k selected species
live longer larger body size lots of parental care fewer offspring live in stable environment
what is Gause’s law of competitive exclusion
2 species that compete for the exact same resource cannot stably coexist
definition of a fundamental niche
the term for what an organisms niche would be in the absence of competition from other species
definition of a realised niche
the set of conditions actually used by an animal/species after interactions with other species e.g. competition, have been taken into account
