Lecture 8: Antidepressant Drugs Flashcards
What is depression with mania?
Bipolar disorder.
What are the monoamine neurotransmitters involved in depression?
Noradrenaline
Dopamine
Serotonin (5-HT)
Out of noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin, which can have a ligand-gated ion channel receptor type?
Serotonin, all the rest have g-protein coupled receptors.
What do monoamine oxidase inhibitors do?
Inhibit the metabolism of monamines (by inhibiting monoamine oxidase).
Which are more selective, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) or noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (NRIs)?
SSRIs and NRIs.
During the use of antidepressant drugs, do anti-depressive effects or side effects emerge first?
Side effects emerge immediately whereas it can take several weeks to exert an anti-depressive effect.
