Lecture 2: Alzheimer's Disease And Treatments Flashcards
1
Q
Which protein has three major alleles which greatly dictate a predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease or not?
A
Apolipoprotein E.
Three alleles:
APOE2 - very rare and provides protection from Alzheimer’s.
APOE3 - very common and normal.
APO*E4 - rare and increases risk of Alzheimer’s.
2
Q
The gene for Apolipoprotein E is on which chromosome?
A
Chromosome 19.
3
Q
What is the regular role of APO E?
A
Removes beta amyloid proteins from the CNS.
4
Q
What is the reason for limited success in treating Alzheimer’s?
A
Focus is on symptoms of disease rather than cause.
5
Q
What are the two main neurotransmitter systems that are affected in Alzheimer’s disease?
A
Acetylcholine and Glutamate.
