Lecture 8 Flashcards
1
Q
What factors will influence the amount of attenuation that will occur in a tissue?
A
- Tissue thickness
- Density of the tissue
- Beam energy kV - PE (photoelectric effect)
- Atomic number of the tissue
2
Q
What are the two method of attenuation that can occur?
A
- Absorption (photoelectric effect)
- Scatter (compton scatter)
3
Q
What is the significance of the photoelectric effect?
A
- Results in an increased patient dose
- Results in decreased beam penetration
- Increased image contrast
4
Q
What are the two factors that influence the photoelectric effect?
A
- Beam energy (kV)
- Tissue atomic number
5
Q
What causes comptom scatter?
A
Interactions with the outer shell electrons
6
Q
Why is comptom scatter significant?
A
- Results in increased scatter production
- Decreased film quality
- Increased worker dose
7
Q
What are the factors that will influence compton scatter?
A
- Tissue thickness (greater thickness increases the likelyhood of outer shell interactions and hence increases Compton scatter)
- Tissue Density (means the atoms are closer together and hence Compton scatter increases)
- Beam energy (kV) (greater beam energy increases reactions with outer shell electrons)
