Lecture 8 Flashcards
briefly describe circulatory system
the circulatory system is a set of interconnected tube and blood flows along a pressure gradient (hi to lo) and the heart actively pumps to generate blood pressure. Capillaries are the site of material diffusion/exchange.
what is going to be a feature of capillaries for diffusion?
they need to very thin.
Intercalated disks:
are specialized gap junctions that exists inbetween individual muscle cells. They allow cell to cell electrical ion currents
describe single circuit system:
Blood is pumped from the single ventricle to gills to be oxygenated. It generates a maximum aortic blood pressure of about 30/20 mmHG. Any higher than this would cause fluid to leak out of gill epithelium. Present in lamprey, chondricthyes and actinopterygia
what is a three chambered heart really excellent at?
diving!
The phylogeny of arterial vessels is related to what?
related to phylogeny of pharyngeal arches, pouches and slits.
heart and blood vessels come from what?
mesoderm
angiogenesis:
occurs in very early organogensis
- Why do we fold the heart? Why not develop an AV segment in the straight tube?
tbx5 patterns what in the heart?
right and left
