lecture 7: mendelian postulates Flashcards
independent alignment
each pair of chromosomes sorts maternal and paternal homologs into daughter cells independently of the other pairs
mendels first postulate
genetic characters are controlled by unit factors existing in pairs in individual organisms
mendels second postulate
if the two alleles at a locus differ, then one (dominant) determines the organism’s appearance, and the other (recessive) has no noticeable effect on appearance
mendel’s third postulate
the two alleles for a heritable character separate during gamete formation and end up in different gametes (law of segregation)
law of segregation
2 alleles of each gene are packaged into separate gametes
* 3:1 ratio (phenotypic)
mendel’s 4th postulate (independent assortment)
each pair of alleles segregates indepently of any other pair during gamete formation
