Lecture 7 - Art & History of Articulators & Teeth Flashcards
2 types of suspension elements?
- noncondylar axis
2. postional
Type of condylar elements?
- mobile
2. adjustable
type of semi-adjustable condylar elements?
- arcon - anatomically correct
2. non-arcon - oppos of arcon
What are the factors of Hanau’s quint?
condylar guidance, incisal guidance, plane of occlusion, compensating curve, cuspal inclination
Thiedleman’s formula?
(condylar guidance x incisal guidance)/ (plane of occlusion x compensating curve x cuspal inclination)
What are the modern articulator classifications?
- simple hinged
- fixed condyle
- semi-adjustable
- fossa-molded
- fully adjustable
First articulator was made in 1804 by…? What particular element did it utilize?
Gariot’s. (Plane line) First articulator had hinged elements. It used one thumb screw to determine the U/L dimension of the device and to measure the vertical dimension of the patient.
What are articulator(s) that use the mobile condylar element?
Bonwill’s articulator, so it did hinge movt AND some translation w/ springs.
Bonwill triangle was how many inches per side?
4 inches on each side of equilateral triangle.
Bonwill determined what about teeth occlusion?
He determined that the overbite/underbite in proportion (occlusion) determined the length of the cusps. (teeth will erupt until they contact opposing teeth)
T/F When you have a balanced occlusion and chew from side to side, posterior teeth will be out of contact.
False, they will still be in contact in a balanced occlusion.
What is articulator(s) that use the adjustable condylar element?
Luce’s “OGEE” curvature
Walker’s articulator - had to use facial clinometer (that crazy ass Saw-movie like torture device..)
Who decided that the facial clinometer was irrational?
Christensen made a “rational” articulator, which used a protrusive record to change the condylar angle.
Who subscribed to the theory that condyles had no effect on suspension of the mandible and instead had a spherical theory?
Monson. Monson’s sphere is still used today to establish occlusal plane if you have no other intraoral reference to make prosthodontics/dentures.
Who subscribed to the theory that condyles had no effect on suspension of the mandible and instead had a conical theory?
Hall (Hall’s conical theory). He believed that it was in line from occipital to frontal bone.
