6
Q

First articulator was made in 1804 by…? What particular element did it utilize?

A

Gariot’s. (Plane line) First articulator had hinged elements. It used one thumb screw to determine the U/L dimension of the device and to measure the vertical dimension of the patient.

7
Q

What are articulator(s) that use the mobile condylar element?

A

Bonwill’s articulator, so it did hinge movt AND some translation w/ springs.

9
Q

Bonwill determined what about teeth occlusion?

A

He determined that the overbite/underbite in proportion (occlusion) determined the length of the cusps. (teeth will erupt until they contact opposing teeth)

10
Q

T/F When you have a balanced occlusion and chew from side to side, posterior teeth will be out of contact.

A

False, they will still be in contact in a balanced occlusion.

Q

What is articulator(s) that use the adjustable condylar element?

A

Luce’s “OGEE” curvature

Walker’s articulator - had to use facial clinometer (that crazy ass Saw-movie like torture device..)

12
Q

Who decided that the facial clinometer was irrational?

A

Christensen made a “rational” articulator, which used a protrusive record to change the condylar angle.

13
Q

Who subscribed to the theory that condyles had no effect on suspension of the mandible and instead had a spherical theory?

A

Monson. Monson’s sphere is still used today to establish occlusal plane if you have no other intraoral reference to make prosthodontics/dentures.

14
Q

Who subscribed to the theory that condyles had no effect on suspension of the mandible and instead had a conical theory?

A

Hall (Hall’s conical theory). He believed that it was in line from occipital to frontal bone.

15
Q

Who used the positional type of suspension element?

A

Gysi’s Simplex Articulator
Gysi’s Adjustable Articulator
Stansbery’s Tripod

16
Q

What did Gysi’s arrow point tracing to?

A

Helped define the border movts of mandible (like Posselt’s diagram)

17
Q

Tell me about Stansbery’s tripod?

A

Each leg had a universal joint that can be moved around independently. Had to match up to R/L lateral protrusion.

18
Q

What where the early tooth replacement locations/time frames that Monsieur Wicks gave us?

A

Ancient Egypt
Middle Ages Europe
Colonial America

19
Q

Tell me about Gysi’s Simplex Articulator?

A
  • early arcon articulator
  • condyles on the lower member
  • condylar guidance set at 30 degrees
  • incisal guidance set at 60 degrees
20
Q

Tell me about Gysi’s Shark Tooth Occlusal Pathways?

A
  1. articulator condyles set to 20, 30, 40 degrees
  2. metal shark’s teeth mounted against plaster block
  3. tooth surfaces cut out by masticatory movts
  • still used today
  • first made an anatomicporcelain tooth 33 degrees designed to function harmoniously w/ incisal and condylar guidance
21
Q

Tell me about Gysi’s Adjustable Articulator?

A
  • 1st to use side shift adjustment and incisal guide table

- arcon instrument

22
Q

Tell me about semi-adjustable articulators?

A

early articulators were capable of accepting a facebow transfer, centric & eccentric records
- examples: Hanua Model H & GysiTrubyte

23
Q

What is the most widely used and manufactured articulator?

A

Hanau’s model

24
What does arcon and non-arcon mean?
Arcon means anatomically correct (condyle attached to lower member and fossa to the upper member of articulator).Non-arcon is the opposite.
25
Are our WhipMix articulators an arcon articulator?
YUUSSSSSSS EET IZ
26
Christensen phenomena?
When you protrude the jaw, you get separation of posterior teeth, and thus get occlusion, you will have to have teeth on a curve (Curve of Spee)
27
What 5 elements need to align in order to have bilateral balance and teeth to remain touching?
``` 1 condylar guidance 2 incisal guidance 3 plane of occlusion 4 compensating curve 5 cuspal guidance ``` -In Hanau Quint, it shows condylar & incisal guidance on one side of a see-saw like diagram. The rest of the factors on the other side.
28
If you increase incisal guidance,then what must increase?
plane of occlusion, compensating curve, or cuspal inclination
29
T/F You can change condylar guidance, but can't change incisal guidance.
FALSE! Can change incisal guidance, but not condylar guidance (unless you do invasive surgery).
30
What are example(s) of simple hinge (plane line) articulators?
Kerr's Verticulator | Gariot's articulator (remember, it was 1st articulator made)
31
What are example(s) of fixed condyle (arbitrary) articulators?
Gysi's Simplex Articulator
32
What are example(s) of semi-adjustable articulators?
- Hanau's H series (used facebow, condyles et by intraoral protrusive records) - Whipmix articulator
33
What are example(s) of fossa-molded articulators?
Wifp's TMJ articulator (used intraoral molded records transferred to instrument to have fossa shapes formed into acrylic)
34
What are example(s) of fully adjustable articulators?
Granger's Gnatholator - developed to capture mandibular movt in specific manner - provides any specific side shift - provides timing from one jaw to another - uses pantograph
