Lecture 1: Alginate Impressions Flashcards
What thickness is required of an accurate alginate impression?
thickness between 1/8 and 1/4 of an inch
T/F: Adhesives CANNOT be used when making an impression.
FALSE! Adhesives can be used to prevent pullbacks which would otherwise require the impression to be redone.
Why would prepackaged Alginate material be preferred?
reduced exposure to humidity, pre-calculated, longer shelf life.
How would adding less water than recommended to the alginate powder affect the material?
makes for a less viscous material. REMEMBER! add water first and then powder
What is the main advantage of vacuum mixing?
Less air captured in mixture–> less air bubbles–> more accurate and stable impression
T/F: When taking an impression, you only want to put enough material in the tray to take a negative of all tooth structures.
FALSE! You want to overextend the impression to include the deep tissue (vestibule) as well.
Where should the operator be positioned when taking a MANDIBULAR impression?
operator in front with fingers on top of tray
Where should the operator be positioned when taking a MAXILLARY impression?
operator behind with fingers in middle of tray
How should the tray be placed into the patient’s mouth when taking an impression?
Roll back to forward so the material doesn’t fall to back of throat of patient and so that the deep tissue of the anterior vestibule is captured as well.
How much time should it take to MIX the alginate?
1 min
How much time should it take to LOAD and SET the tray?
1.25 min
How much time does it take for the material to POLYMERIZE?
2.25 min
How much time does it take to DISINFECT the impression?
10.5 min
How long should the entire process of making an impression with alginate take?
15 min in completion
How do we disinfect the impression?
By spraying it with disinfectant. Why? because water flows in and out of the precipitate so you don’t want it to absorb too much water and alter the dimension.
