Lecture #7 Flashcards
What is a human pedigree?
shows the relationship between members of a family
What does a double line mean in a human pedigree?
mating between relatives
What are characteristics of autosomal dominant traits?
appears equally in males and females
unaffected people do not transmit the trait
affected people have at least one affected parent
for matings with one affected parent, 1/2 the offspring are affected
affected individuals appear in every generation
How do mammals adapt to unequal dosage of x-linked genes in males and females?
by inactivating one of the two X chromosomes in females
How do drosophila adapt to unequal dosage of x-linked genes in males and females?
hyper-activating the single X chromosomes in males
How do C. elegans adapt to unequal dosage of x-linked genes in males and females?
each of the two x chromosomes has reduced activity, that are collectively equal to the single X in males
What is the barr body?
the in activity highly condensed X chromosome
What are the characteristics of autosomal recessive traits?
appears equally in males and females
tends to skip generations
often results from mating between relatives
affected individuals can have unaffected parents
