Lecture 7 Flashcards
1
Q
Micro-evolution?
A
Evolution within population level. Mainly occurs through selection or drift
2
Q
Macro-evolution?
A
Evolution at or above species level. Mass extinctions and speciation.
3
Q
Biological species concept:
A
Consists of group that carries potential for interbreeding but is reproductively isolated (closed gene pool)
4
Q
Problems with biological species concept?
A
- Only applies to sexually reproducing species
- Suggests that two different species would never mate and produce offspring
- Ecological species concept: Species is a set of organisms adapted to particular resource set (niche)
- Phylogenetic species concept: evolutionary history
5
Q
Allopatric speciation?
A
When population becomes divided by geographical barrier (genetic drift and natural selection)
6
Q
Sympatric speciation?
A
Subgroups form within continuous habitat. (behavioural and temporal isolation)
