Lecture 69 (LAST NEURO!) Flashcards
The entire CNS is enclosed by 3 connective tissue membranes known as
the meninges
What are the functions of the meninges?
protection of the CNS and blood vessels along with containing the CSF
CSF is produced by epindymal glia in the
choroid plexi
The spinal cord only has which layer of the dura mater?
the inner meningeal layer
The dura mater contains how many layers - and what are they?
2 layers; the outer periosteal and the inner meningeal
T or F: the two layers of the dura mater are always fused
false; they are normally, but an exception is when they enclose the dural sinuses
The outer periosteal layer is attached to the
skull
Which layer of the dura mater is the “true external covering”?
the inner meningeal
Encephalitis or brain inflammation is caused by
meningitis - normally diagnosed by lumbar puncture or sampling of CSF
What does the CSF fill?
the four brain ventricles and the cisterna magna
What is the purpose of the CSF?
cushions and protects brain tissue (they have a similar specific gravity - this is why the brain “floats”)
What is responsible for transporting excess CSF?
the arachnoid villi
What is the order of the three carotid arteries (from top to bottom)?
internal, external and common
Which jugular vein is larger, internal or external?
internal (this is opposite of the arteries)
This theory links migraine to the phenomenon of cortical spreading depression which is due to abnormally high extracellular potassium
