Lecture 6 - Urban Transportation Flashcards
What are the three key aspects of sustainable transportation that compose sustainable urban development?
- Modes
- Infrastructures
- Logistics
Urban Transportation effects which three components of an urban area?
Environment
Economy
Society
What are the Environmental detriments caused by Urban Transportation?
Air Quality
Land Use
Light Pollution
Noise
Waste
What are the Economical benefits that stem from Urban Transportation?
Competitiveness
Job and Prosperity
Fair Pricing
Choice
Growth
What are the Societal factors that are influenced by Urban Transportation?
Safety
Health
Disturbance
Access
Equity
What are the average speeds of the different modes which people use to transport?
A pedestrian can walk, on average, about 5km/h
A streetcar line can travel roughly 10km/h
A bicycle can travel 15km/h on average
Driving, roughly 30km/h, taking into account stopping, parking, and traffic
Driving along freeways, speed is doubled to roughly 60km/h
“To generate exuberant diversity in a city’s streets and districts, four conditions are indispensable.”
They are…?
- The district must serve more than one function
- The street blocks must be short, with ability to make turns frequently
- The district must mingle buildings that vary in age/condition. A variance in economic yield is important
- There has to be a sufficiently dense concentration of people
How does cycling benefit the Environmental aspect of an Urban Area?
Technically reduces climate change/ no emissions
Air quality is unaffected
Less noisy
Take up less space than vehicles
Less waste/materials required
How does cycling benefit the economy?
Healthier for people, lower consumption of fossil fuels
Bikes are more accessible than vehicles/cost less/ less maintenance fees/ no gas
Bike are competitive with cars and transit
There are different kinds of bikes for different types of riding/commutes
How does cycling in urban areas have an effect on society?
People are afraid of injury/ you are technically more injury prone
Cycling is great for your health
Bikes are only really a disruption when new bike path are being implemented
Less people are able to ride bikes safely, as opposed to vehicles. Young children/ elderly can’t rely on bicycles for independent transport
Bike-friendly neighbourhoods/ bike lanes are being implemented. They change the dynamic of the streets
What is the relationship between population density and energy consumption in urban areas?
The higher the population density (Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore), the less energy consumption per capita.
The major cities of America have very high energy consumption, with lower population densities compared to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, etc.
Asia is the best, Europe in the middle, Canada/Aussie, then USA
