Lecture 6: Neurotransmitter Systems Flashcards
What are the two types of neurotransmitter, distinguished by their synthesis?
Small molecule neurotransmitters and peptide neurotransmitters.
What is it called when two different neurotransmitters are released from the same vesicle?
Co-release.
What is it called when two different neurotransmitters are released from the same synaptic terminal but from separate vesicles?
Co-transmission.
Which cell does the glutamate-glutamine cycle involve?
Glial cell. Glial cells take up extracellular glutamate, turn it into glutamine (using glutamine synthetase), and glutamine then goes back into the presynaptic terminal.
All dopamine receptors are ligand gated ion channels or GPCRs?
They are all GPCRs.
