Lecture 6: Heart & Pericardium Flashcards
What is the fossa ovalis formed from and where is it?
The closure of the interatrial septum at birth which was open during fetal development.
Depression in the inter-atrial septum
How many papillary muscles are there in the right ventricle?
3
What is the name of the valve between the right atrium and right ventricle?
Tricuspid
What is the name of the valve between the right ventricle and the pulmonary trunk?
Pulmonary semilunar valve
What are the chordae tendinae?
Heart strings that attach the 3 cusps of the tricuspid valve to the 3 papillary muscles
What is the crista terminalis?
The ridge running perpendicular to the musculi pectinati
Where the SA node is found
What are the two pericardial sinuses?
Transverse
Oblique
What is the pericardium innervated by?
Branches of the phrenic nerve
C3, 4, 5,
Anterior to root of the lung
Where is pain from the pericardium referred to?
C3, 4, 5 dermatome
What are the three layers of the heart?
Endocardium - internal
Myocardium - muscle
Epicardium - outer I.e. Visceral layer of serous membrane (same thing different name)
What is the serous pericardium?
Double layered membrane
Two layers
> visceral - lines the surface of the heart
> parietal - fibrous sheath
What is the purpose of the pericardium ?
Anchors the heart in place
What is the pericardial space?
Allows the heart to move when it beats
Contains a bit of fluid
What is the fibrous pericardium?
Thick and dense
Attaches to the central tendon of diaphragm anchors to root of the great vessels
