What is the Psychoactive substances act 2016?
It is illegal to possess, supply, export or produce any psychoactive substance (volatile substance, solvents, gases, NPS) not covered by drug misused act.
Heroin is the most widely misused opioid. Why is it problematic?
It is problematic because of the adverse effects of using heroin. These effects can be physical, psychological and social. There are withdrawal symptoms, craving, tolerance.
Who can naloxone be supplied to and why?
Naloxone can be supplied to someone who uses opiates and is at potential risk of overdose. It can also be given to a family, carer or friend liable to be on hand in case of overdose. It is often given to a named individual in a hostel or other facility where drug users gather or might be at risk of overdose.
Why should opioid misuse be stopped?
- reduce criminal activity
- reduce threat to public health/ safety
- reduce illicit drug use/relapse
- reduce associated risks/death
- alleviate withdrawar symptoms
- improve personal, social and family functioning.
