Lecture 6- B Cells and Antibody Flashcards
Define antibody
Y shaped antigen-specific proteins produced by B lymphocytes
Define antigen
A foreign substance which induces an immune response in the body especially the production of antibodies
What is antigen specificity ?
Antibody binds to a particular antigen with high affinity but not to other antigens
What is another name for antibody?
Immunoglobulin
What are antibody isotopes?
IgM, IgD, IgA, IgG, IgE
Different heavy chain constant regions produce antibodies with different properties
What doesn’t the antibody isotope affect?
Doesn’t affect what it binds to
What does the FAB region do?
Binds to the antigen
What does the FC region do?
Interacts with other components of immunity
What are the heavy chains ?
Inside long ones
What is the FAB made of?
Light and heavy chains. Known as variable region (variable between antibodies)
What is an epitope?
Part of an antigen molecule to which an antibody attaches itself
What is the constant region made up of?
Only heavy chains
Where would you find the FC region?
At the stem of the antibody
Where do antibodies attach to B cells?
At the FC region
