Q

what is the first sermon in sarnath (varanasi)

A

quote on page 43; Monks, it is through not understanding, through not penetrating the Four Noble Truths that this long course of birth and death has been passed through and under- gone by me as well as by you. What are these four? They are the noble truth of suf- fering (du􏰃kha); the noble truth of the origin of suffering; the noble truth of the ces- sation of suffering; and the noble truth of the way to the cessation of suffering. But now, monks, that these have been realized and penetrated, cut off is the craving for existence, destroyed is that which leads to renewed becoming, and there is no more re-becoming (D.ii.90)

4 noble truths of suffering
idea that ay animal footprint can fit into that on an elephants foot print! noble truths like the elephant’s footprint, they are something to encapsle everything

16
Q

What are the 3 types of suffering (Duhka)

A

Duhka-duhka
Viparinama-duhka
Samskara-duhka

17
Q

explain Duhka-duhka

A

suffering of suffering
the obvious stuff, stubbed toe grief, etc
buddha doesn’t need to tell you this

18
Q

explain Viparinama-duhka

A

suffering due to change

  • might need guidance ti understand why falling in love, being beautiful and winning the lottery is painful
  • why? they are transient, they are all going to change! everything ends in separation (death) or the home will fall apart/become a burden to if it remains perfect, you wont be able to take care of it in your old age and someone else will take it on as a burden or you will die and separate from i, etc
19
Q

explain Samskara-duhka

A

suffering as formations (different word than the earlier one)
-the constant process of things coming together is a constant source of stress/suffering, but a very subtly for of suffering! Not intuitively felt by everyone, only those that are in constant practice for them

20
Q

what are the 3 marks of existence (still part of the first noble truth)

A

duhka/dukkha: suffering
anatman/anatta
anitya/anicca

21
Q

what is anatman/anatta

A

no self (no soul)
contradiction/specific understanding of a sentient being (with mind)
we develop the habit of relating to self, think something inside stays permanent

22
Q

what is anitya/anicca

A

impermanence
-connected to the way suffering is described
no matter what you think about (any scale), all of it is impermanent, it changes moment by moment
-things that seem stable aren’t, even mountains change albeit slowly
nothing is stable

23
Q

what are the 5 aggregates (skandha/khandha)

A

a collection fo things;
material form (rupa)
feelings and sensations (vedana)
perceptions/cognition (samjna/sanna)
constricting activities/formations (samskara/sankhara)
discriminative consciousness (vijnana/vinnana)

24
Q

explain material form (rupa)

A

our physicalities, solids, liquids, gasses… all physical stuff that makes us up

25
Q

what is the point of 5 aggregates (skandha/khandha)

A

factors of personality/psycho-physical constituents, bundles of grasping fuels
buddha saw these as describing us

26
Q

explain feelings and sensations (vedana)

A

we might feel like feelings are vast and various but according to buddhists only 3 exist; positive, negative ad neutral

27
Q

explain perceptions/cognition (samjna/sanna)

A

when processing or sensing stimuli, the point at which things crystallize into object form (object recognition)

28
Q

explain constricting activities/formations (samskara/sankhara)

A

formations of what makes us a person; deeply engrained habits that run such at deep levels, don’t even know we have it necessarily but it carries into other lifetimes
basically taking about someone’s personality

29
Q

explain consciousness (vijnana/vinnana)

A

has to do with process fo perception before we reach state of recognizing objects!

30
Q

buddhists say we have how many sense

A

6

31
Q

what are the 6 buddhist senses

A

visual, auditory, olfactory, touch, taste, mind

32
Q

what is the sense ‘mind’

A

thoughts are mental objects, dreams are also mental objects

puts data from other forms together

33
Q

the 3 marks of existence; the 5 aggregates are taught how

A

in the context of there is no permanence but there are 5 objects
