lecture 6 Flashcards
1
Q
What are some distinguishing features of TB? Staining? Pigmentation and airborne?
A
- Acid fast pathogen cell wal has high lipid affinity content and binds to zeel-nielhson stain.
- Purple pigmentation is a sign of disease
2
Q
What are the characteristics of MTB?
A
- Its Rod-shaped obligate anaerobe, host immunity important
- Intracellular parasite: requires cell-mediated defence
- High lipid cell walls
3
Q
How does the host react?
A
- Resistance
- Genetic succepitibility
- immune response
- Coesxising dsease and coniditons
4
Q
What is the first exposure to TB like?
A
- No delyaed hypersensitivity
- marcophage recognizes bacteria and activates C3B complement to opsonize it
- Then the macrophages engulf them but due to to Tb prevents phagolysosome from fusing
