Lecture 6 Flashcards
What do Biological membranes consist of?
Lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates.
What is the fluid mosaic model?
It describes a phospholipid bilayer in which membrane proteins move laterally within the membrane.
What do Peripheral proteins do?
They attach to the surface of the phospholipid bilayer by ionic bonds.
What are Integral membrane proteins?
Proteins that are inserted into the phospholipid bilayer.
What is a transmembrane protein?
An integral protein that crosses the bilayer completely.
Why would the two surface membranes have different properties?
Because they have different phospholipid compositions, exposed areas of integral membrane, proteins, and peripheral membrane proteins.
What else would have a different membrane proteins?
define regions of a plasma membrane.
What do carbohydrates that attach to proteins are fossils projects from the external servant of the plasma membrane do?
The function as recognition signals between cells.
