Lecture 5a Flashcards

1
Q

How do we differentiate between type 1 and type 2 respiratory failure

Q

In Hypoxemia caused by a shunt (no ventilation) or dead space (no perfusion) how would the response to increased FiO2 be , good or poor (or none)?

A

Poor or none because the problem is either not being able to get air into the lungs or difficulty getting air from lungs to tissues

Q

Why is pH low in acute hypoventilation and increased in chronic hypoventilation

A

In chronic hypoventilation the kidneys increase the concentration of bicarbonate ions to buffer the H+ ions and stabilise the pH
