Lecture 5.1: BP and hypertension Flashcards
Where can baroreceptors be found?
Carotid sinus and aortic arch.
Where is the brainstem cardiovascular control centre found?
Medulla, there are pressor and depressor functions there. Operates via autonomic nervous system -> SNS/PNS
How often does the BP resets in a day?
Once or twice a day.
At what BP does chemoreceptors then kick in? What do they respond to?
Low O2, below 60mmHg.
True or false? Women and men have the same mean BP.
False. Men have higher, 94mmHg compared to 89mmHg.
What happens past 60 years of age?
Arteries fibrose, therefore compliance drops. Diastolic pressure drops but systolic continues to rise. So Pulse pressure increases.
True or false? Females have a higher blood pressure than males at 10 years?
True, they go through puberty faster.
True or false? Mass is proportional to BP
True.
List the BP differences diurnally and seasonally.
20mmHg lower at night as less sympathetic innervation. 3mmHg higher in summer.
